Gardening Tips for the Month of January

By Amber Kostic

Annuals:

By keeping your beds well mulched you can retain soil warmth, conserve water and it will help stop the weeds from growing.

January and February are normally our coldest weather months. Plants that are bedding plants do not need protection.

Normal rainfall and cool temperatures makes watering unnecessary in the month of January, but if plants seem dry water thoroughly.

If the plant is a dark green color you do not need to fertilize, but if they are a light green or a yellow-greenish color you need to fertilize.

Vegetables:

There are some plants you can plant during the month of January are: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, or turnips.

Trees:

If you are planning to plant trees during the month of January determine the selection of the trees and placement of your trees in you landscape carefully. Be sure to know how big the trees will get in the years to come and what requirements they need, such as full sun or part shade. Make sure you give them plenty of room to grow!

Canine Care and Training Information

By: Dalton White

The best way to train a dog is with positive reinforcement or operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is when a desired behavior or a close approximation to it is followed by a rewarding or reinforcing stimulus. A good example of this would be clicker training. In clicker training you use a clicker as a marker to let the dog know that what they have done is a desired behavior. The dog will then be given a "treat". Some treats are food but may also be a toy or praise even petting. You do not have to have a clicker in order to clicker train; you could also use a verbal marker such as "yes". The marker lets the dog know that what they just did was good and that they are about to get a treat.

To use a marker you need to make sure the dog understands what the marker means. To do this you need to get 30 – 40 small soft treats (the size of your pinky fingernail…even if you have a large dog). Then click, treat, click, treat or yes, treat, yes, treat about 30-40 times. Now, the dog should understand that when they hear the marker they will get a treat. As you begin to train your dog when they get the desired behavior correct you click or say yes, then treat. Do not treat for undesired behavior. Smart Thoughts

5 Factors affecting plant growth:

temperature

sunlight

water

nutrients

air

5 Factors affecting a child’s growth:

healthy/safe environment

nutrition

exercise/sunshine

love

encouragement

When growing plants if one or more of the above factors are not ideal or optimal for the plant, the plant will not grow to its potential. Like wise, we need to be sure to give our children what they need to grow. If we forget to give our kids the love and encouragement they need they may not meet their awesome potential! Give a kid a hug and an encouraging word today and everyday! Happy Holidays!
